Gearbox: Just a “B” Studio?

Gearbox Software just recently threw itself into yet another fiasco of a launch with their release of Aliens: Colonial Marines. Preview writers and interviewers claim they were lied to outright, reviewers absolutely despise the game, Sega may have been tricked into funding Borderlands 2 development instead of A:CM, and pretty much anyone who preordered the “game” feels scammed.

This seems to be a trend for them, so, let’s journey into my conspiracy theory to get a better peak at what the hell is wrong with Gearbox.

Ouya’s Risky Retail Gamble

The Android powered micro-console that took Kickstarter by storm, won’t be an online exclusive for long. In June, just two months after initial sales and backed units begin shipping, the company is hoping to take that success out of the digital realm and repeat it in the physical by striking deals with GameStop, Target, and BestBuy.

While that’s surely a legitimizing move for the young new console, and the team behind it, it makes me wonder if Ouya has missed the point a little.

Steam Guides: The Beast Becomes Stronger

There’s no contest when it comes to PC gaming: Steam is the place to be. Their sales drive interest of games through the roof, their overlay and community features are unparalleled, and their selection goes from all kinds of software to almost any kind of game. Although there have been many contenders that stepped up to the plate to offer similar services, many do so out of a sense of fear; afraid that by giving Valve a monopoly on PC gaming, we will lose that special something business thrives on: competition.

However, Valve is not intimidated by competition and seeks it out regularly with the implementation of bold new features. Last fall it was Big Picture Mode, moving the Steam experience away from the PC and into the living room. Now, it is eliminating the need for a second screen/device to look to for help, with their new community feature: Steam Guides.

CrossBuy: Sony’s One Way Street

There are two interesting services that Sony deployed with the PS Vita: Cross Save and Cross Buy. The first allows you to pick up a save file from the PS3 when you were last playing on the Vita, or vice versa, and the second allows you to purchase a game once, but get a copy for both your PS3 and PS Vita. For those of us with both devices, these features are like the future incarnate; and for PSN games, it works fantastically.

However, when it comes to purchasing an actual PS Vita cartridge, you do not get the Cross Buy deal, even if the physical PS3 copy has this feature included. Unfortunately, I found this out the hard way.

Disillusioned with smartphone gaming

For a while, it seemed like every time I hit refresh on a game blog, there would be a new report of how mobile gaming was going to kill the handheld and console markets. Most of these stories were based on quotes from mobile developers themselves, looking to boast about how well their cheap or free-to-play games were doing in contrast to the bloated, AAA-infested gaming machines that seem to be having quite the struggle as of late.

I even bought into it for a short period of time, right after jumping onto the Android bandwagon, but those days are long over… now, I’m becoming wary of mobile games and find myself deleting them from my phone more than I put them on there.

Gen Fail: Afraid to Play Our Expensive Toys

We spend hundreds of dollars on consoles. We invest in their ecosystems with $60 dollar games, downloadable content, and chunky plastic peripherals. We trade in real world money for points that can only be used on their online stores. Many of us become fanboys of our favorite system, propping it up like our favorite sports team; whether they have a good or bad season, we root for them and hope they can weather the storm to see brighter days.

But with the current generation of hardware, there is a darker more paranid side, where we buy external fans, install every game before playing, void warrantys to fix and generally do whatever we can to make sure our consoles don’t permanently fail on us… because it seems like, anymore, it’s just a matter of time before they do.
