It’s been a good time, but it seems the free updates to the surprise hit, Terraria, may be done.
After a year of continually stunning the internet with how much people wanted a 2D sandbox, mining, adventure game, the dev’s are moving on to new projects which are hopefully just as awesome as the first.
Some reasons listed are that one of the dev’s is having a second cild soon, a member of their team branched off to form Chucklefish (which is working on the neat looking game StarBound), needing time to recharge and rest, and a desire to work on new things and once again test their abilities in a new arena.
It’s definitely a bit depressing to see such an amazing game’s dev-cycle come to an end, but I know that I couldn’t have asked for much more than they gave. In the past year I’ve spent over 80 hours in the game and have a handful of friends that are nearing 200 hrs soon. The only thing I would have asked for is better online support being baked in, but hopefully they’ll tackle that beast in their next game and come back to Terraria to bless us with a surprise at some point in the future.
Maybe it’s wishful thinking… but it’s just a little difficult to think of a game this vibrant not continuing on forever.
